So sunscreen DOES work…

December 29th, 2009

Yesterday I spent a lovely and relaxing day at the cricket… I spent much of the day smothering myself in sunscreen to avoid getting burnt by the sun – being so pale I tend to burn very easily – and here in Australia we’re always getting the sunscreen message drummed into us. Having said that I’ve always been a little suspicious about how effective sunscreen really is.. That is until last night when I got home from the cricket….

I’d like for you to guess which area I missed when applying the sunscreen…

It doesn’t actually hurt – but it does look quite bad..  Lesson learned.. Sunscreen = good.

(Number of times the word “sunscreen” was used in the above: 5. 6 including the one in the previous sentence – and 7 including the title – so there…

Catch you later, England..

December 8th, 2008

After saying farewell for what now seems like six months, it’s finally crunch time. It’s now Sunday night and I’ll be leaving the UK on Wednesday night.. nearly there.. Packing is more or less done – just a few minor things to sort out over the next couple of days and I’ll be right to go.

I expect that the internet connection in my flat will be cut off tomorrow, so I quickly wanted to touch base before I leave for home. As this is my last post from the UK I hope you’ll allow a little cheesiness..

This is usually where I’d go into a long, philosophical ramble about our time in the UK.. But thanks (in a good way) to Jason I have a belly full of ribs :-) and my desire to sleep is greater than my desire to write. So the ramble will have to come at another time..

However, in short:

  • Days living in the UK: 1270
  • Concerts attended: 32 (click here for the list)
  • Countries visited: Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Morocco, Austria, Hungary, Norway, Belgium, Ireland, Slovenia, Czech Republic … and of course the UK.
  • Soccer World Cup Quarter Finals Attended: 1
  • Pizzas consumed at the local Egham Italian restaurant “Villa Rosa”: (classified)

It has been an amazing experience.. I have met and worked with some wonderful people. Seen lots of beautiful places and of course eaten/drunk a world of culinary delights.

The standard of living in the UK is far higher than I expected it to be. Olivia and I carved out a nice little existence for ourselves. Am curious to see how we get along back home.

Europe is wonderful.. I regret nothing. Australia, here I come…

2008 so far…

April 6th, 2008

It has been a while since I’ve written here. Not that there’s nothing to say, quite the opposite in fact.

Today is a chilled out Sunday, and to be honest my motivation to write a great tome covering the past three months is not great. So here’s something we all can enjoy… photos.. borrowing from the “a picture is worth 1000 words” school of thought – here is several thousand words worth…

Highlights of 2008 so far include:

  • Spending a wonderful two weeks in Melbourne. PHOTOS
  • Visiting Prague for Easter. PHOTOS
  • I went to a Premier League soccer game. PHOTOS
  • Waking up this morning to see snow all over the place. PHOTOS

Life is good…

Mystery solved..

March 8th, 2008

…well sort of.. with many thanks to the handful of people who provided rough translations of the Indonesian in my previous post, I can advise that the article in question has nothing to do with me whatsoever. The article is (broadly speaking) about athletics.

Brian the Gooner

January 9th, 2008

It was bound to happen eventually – I’ve adpoted a British football (soccer) team.

One of my work colleagues Richard has himself a set of season tickets for him and his family. Occasionally someone can’t make it so he has a spare – a spare that he’s offered to me a couple of times. As Richard supports Arsenal, and they were the first team I saw – I decided that they’d be the team for me.

Arsenal

The first game I went to see was a Champions League match between Arsenal and Romanian team Steaua Bucharest. Here is the match report in case you’re interested. Emirates Stadium is Arsenal’s home ground, a recently redeveloped arena which reminded me of Telstra Dome in Melbourne – only better. We had the requisite pre-game “meal” at the ground, and I’m pleased to report that football stadium food is just as lousy in the UK as it is back in Australia. Gee that was a cr@ppy burger.

The game was a lot of fun to watch. I learned that Arsenal supporters are called Gooners – a play on the team’s nickname “Gunners”. The Gooner army was in fine form, chanting away throughout the game. In the grand scheme of things this was not considered to be an important game for the club, and the crowd was still pretty full on, so I can only imagine what they’re like for a “real” game. In a fitting result, Arsenal won 2-1. I came home with an Arsenal scarf, an Arsenal coffee mug (which even has my name on it) and a rediscovered enthusiasm for “the beautiful game”.

As a quick aside – my theory on why soccer fans chant all the time and occasionally get violent is because scoring is such a rarity – there’s not enough opportunity for release. Hence  the mad celebration when someone finally scores. Yes, it could be argued that good things are worth waiting for. But the thought of watching a 90min game for a 0-0 draw is like death for me. This ties in nicely with my extremely unpopular theory that Australian Rules Football is a far superior sport to soccer. But this is a subject worthy of it’s own post so I’ll leave it there – but I know I’m right..

I’ll be seeing Arsenal for the second time this weekend when they play Birmingham. Bring on the lousy burger and the chanting… which I’m bound to learn eventually.
