New depths

February 23rd, 2006

Tomorrow night Olivia and I are going to Oslo for the weekend. Our friends at Yahoo weather advise that for much of the time we’re there the daily maximum will be -2 degrees celsius, and at night it will get down to a frightening -13. I’ve not experienced such low temperatures before. Let’s see how this “I love the cold” theory holds up when I’m faced with the real deal.

Am hoping to come back with some ripper photos.

Can you believe that on Monday Olivia and I will have been married for a year???

Food of the gods

Aaah meat…

One thing I was determined not to miss out on while I was in Melbourne was my beloved, my only, …..my precious…. a decent souvlaki.

Kebab shops are EVERYWHERE here in London. The thing is, I’m yet to find a kebab shop that is fit to wipe the bum of any of the good kebab/souvlaki joints in Melbourne. Zorbas, Lambs, Souvlaki King and Lambs on Chapel set a very high standard with their wonderfully flavoursome meat, and the bread – THE BREAD.. oooh Please forgive me dear reader, my powers of description have deserted me… am too distracted by the fond memories.

Anyway. After trying one kebab over here shortly after our arrival, I decided that rubber was not good for the digestion. So imagine my joy when walking down Brunswick St, Fitzroy and not only did I see my old friend SOUVLAKI KING -but the newcomer on the street – the newcomer with the cool signage. Any shop whose signage is a foam gyros over fake flame is very cool in my books.

I couldn’t resist. And it was heaven. Look at that meat!

I got chatting to the guy in the shop and told him how keen I was to try souvlakis in Greece. He replied that they probably wouldn’t be as good as the ones in Melbourne as the meat in Oz is better. But he added that most souvlakis in Greece are done with pork…. Ping! he had my attention. Now I want to go to Greece even more… Mmmm pork souvlaki.

Back in London

February 5th, 2006

Wow, that went fast. Our two weeks in Melbourne simply flew by and before I know it we’ve already been back in London a week.

It was fantastic being back home for a little while. Seeing my family and friends was just the tonic I needed having hit the “I’ve been away 6 months and am getting homesick” point. There was not enough time to catch up with everyone I had on my list – so apologies to those I didn’t get to see – I simply ran out of time.. As you may remember the motivation for this trip was to spend time with family – and this I did. My Dad is doing better than he was, but is still not out of the woods yet. Some quality time with the fam was good for the soul.

I spent a couple of days wandering around the city, and I found myself really enjoying being a tourist in my home town. Olivia gave me more than one strange look when she saw me taking photos of Flinders St station, Swanston St walk, the Yarra river or some generic streetscape that caught my eye. I was great.

The trip home also gave the opportunity to visit some of my favorite dining haunts. The Vietnamese place in Footscray that does this grilled chicken on rice (Yes Eric – it CAN count as a breakfast :-) My favorite Greek restaurant – Pireaus Blues in Brunswick St. Kim Chi – Excellent Korean in Carnegie. Alaysa – Tuskish in Sydney Rd. And of course, my old beloved La Porchettas in Reservoir. The list goes on… but I’m sure you get the picture.

For those who have been to our place in Footscray, since leaving Melbourne, the back fence and one of the side fences have been replaced. Olivia’s parents have also done a great job on the garden. Yes, things can actually grow in the rock hard soil we left behind. So all in all the backyard has been completely transformed and is looking great.

Before I forget, I just wanted to mention that on our flight from Singapore to Melbourne – we got upgraded to business class. It appears as though Singapore Airlines had oversold the flight due to all the people coming in to Melbourne for the Australian Open. It’s nice to see how the other side lives.. “Another cocktail Mr Polli?” Don’t mind if I do…….
