Map, stuff and animals

August 22nd, 2007

Three new pages on the site.

  1. Thanks to the wonderful people at Google Maps, I’m able to embed a travel map of the places that Olivia and I have visited… I think this is really, really cool.. Here it is.
  2. List of recipes I’ve tried and have worked a treat.
  3. List of gigs I’ve attended here in the UK.

Will add to all three as and when it’s called for.

On a totally separate note.. HERE are a 5 photos from a trip to the London Zoo a little while ago. I love them all…

Tool

August 21st, 2007

I have just arrived home from seeing the band Tool at the Brixton Academy. A concert I had been looking forward to for some time.

I’ll keep it short and give a one word review: Stool

Actually that’s perhaps a bit harsh – but I couldn’t waste the opportunity of turning the bands name into what I thought of the show…

Slightly longer review… I really like their music, it’s definitely at the heavier end of the “Brian Polli music listening spectrum”. I’d heard so many awesome reviews of their live shows that I couldn’t not go. The drummer was awesome, the light show superb – but in the end this was another case where I found that the music didn’t translate all that well from studio album to concert venue.. (THIS being the last time) Just didn”t feel the connection… I actually left just after the half-way mark and have been hanging to make the above “stool” comment ever since… tee hee hee..

Win some, lose some.

York

August 18th, 2007

Kate & Heath came to visit back in April/May and as always we had a ball… Good food and wine are common themes whenever we get together and this was no exception.

We joined Kate & Heath in York for the last weekend of the UK leg of their sold-out European tour. Having spent very little time touring around the UK (we find it an obscenely expensive thing to do – strange but visiting the rest of Europe works out a hell of a lot cheaper) we were happy to get out there and see some of the famous English countryside.

You won’t hear this from me all that often but we had an awesome vegetarian meal. This is not a great photo, but this vego Mexican place was amazing.

We drove from York to Dent for a day long walk… Not knowing the area at all I was more than happy to take Kate & Heath’s lead on this one.. Turns out we weren’t actually meant to go to Dent – but it’s funny how things work out.. After a three hour drive we needed a spot of lunch. The specialty of the local pub was some massive, beyond-phallic sausage – which was quite tasty.

The countryside was really beautiful, photos from the weekend can be found HERE – so you can see for yourself. Rolling hills, cute black-faced sheep, and lots and lots of GREEN – something I don’t seem to get enough of over here. It was a great walk – yes, even the steep hill at the beginning which left me gasping for air..

Dent countryside

Really, really nice….

York itself was a pretty town – nice walls and an attractive cathedral.. But one thing that really caught my attention was this old, painted sign.

Bile beans

Bile beans indeed…. Seems from this that that they are some sort of laxative product from a long time ago. Yummo – got to get me some of those.

Catching up

August 18th, 2007

I’m home alone this weekend. Olivia is in France with her parents. I will be joining them in Milan next Friday – but for now I’ve got a bit of time on my hands.. I’m using the weekend to catch up on things like organising my digital photo collection (which is a lot more interesting than it sounds), watching  DVDs (up to my 5th since last night) and catching up on writing here… I’ve actually done a hell of a lot in the past 3-4 months but have not made the time to write about it.  It’s one of those thing where I think “I can’t really write until I’ve organised the photos so that I can refer to them in the post or upload them to the album”  – so without doing that first bit – the rest never happens.

But I digress, I’m sure you get the picture – I’ve been busy yet slack..  I’ve got a lot to catch up on… Here goes.

Reservoir Ducks

August 13th, 2007

What does every boozy dinner party need? A set of brightly coloured ducks of course.

Reservoir Ducks

They are “Reservoir Ducks” No, there’s no connection to the fine suburb in which I grew up.. (Best deli in Melbourne)… Reservoir Dogs would have been a very different film if these guys were the main characters.

Catrin bought these for Jason as a birthday present. They were the source of much amusement throughout the evening. They have sensors on the bottom that are activated when wet – so the ducks were aroused by being placed in wine glasses, mouths, bowls of water… Fun for the whole family really.
