Silly antlers and amazing lamb

January 27th, 2008

Before I forget, and too much time passes – here are a couple of pics from our Christmas. It was the first Christmas we had spent in the UK (the last two years we’ve been to visit family in Italy). Olivia brought home the obligatory musical antlers….

Xmas

…and I brought home the obligatory hunk of lamb that was way too big for what turned out to be a meal for three.

Lamby

We ended up freezing a lot of it and having them over the next couple of weeks as chops.

I have to say, this lamb roast will go down in history as one of the nicest I’ve ever had. Hooray for the “lamb guy” at the farmers market who prepared it to order. Nothing quite like knowing that a roast has been made especially for you. Classy.

Photos

Just a short note to let you know that I’ve got a new photo gallery running.

The old one died a few months back when I had some virus troubles.

Anyway – HERE – is the link – otherwise simply check out my front page.

Of interest to the world might be some shots from the mudfest that was WOMAD, and a couple of pretty shots from Windsor Castle.

(And yes Peter – I’ll get around to resizing the images so that the file size is smaller.)

Delightfully still

January 26th, 2008

Yesterday morning, Olivia’s younger sister Laura and boyfriend Dion arrived in London to start their European adventre. Being their first night in town we thought we’d take them out for a curry.

 Cobra Beer

Aside from the monster sized bottles of Cobra beer, I ordered a bottle of sparking water. The waiter brought over the water – he confirmed with me that I wanted sparkling, I nodded. I looked at the label which said “Delightfully still” and asked him if he was sure what he was giving me.. “Yes, yes it’s sparkling”

Funnily enough, the bottle whose label said “Delightfully still” did indeed contain still water.

Certainly not a big deal, but really…

Off to Madrid

January 16th, 2008

Greetings from Heathrow airport. In about an hour I’m heading off to Madrid for the next few days for my work’s annual conference. Must say, there was NOTHING like this back in Oz. I’ve not been to Madrid before so I’m a bit excited to see what it’s all about. Am presenting tomorrow so am reasonably nervous, but thankfully I’m on fairly in the piece so I can get it over with quickly and then settle in and enjoy the rest of the show… Bring on the paella.

Brian the Gooner

January 9th, 2008

It was bound to happen eventually – I’ve adpoted a British football (soccer) team.

One of my work colleagues Richard has himself a set of season tickets for him and his family. Occasionally someone can’t make it so he has a spare – a spare that he’s offered to me a couple of times. As Richard supports Arsenal, and they were the first team I saw – I decided that they’d be the team for me.

Arsenal

The first game I went to see was a Champions League match between Arsenal and Romanian team Steaua Bucharest. Here is the match report in case you’re interested. Emirates Stadium is Arsenal’s home ground, a recently redeveloped arena which reminded me of Telstra Dome in Melbourne – only better. We had the requisite pre-game “meal” at the ground, and I’m pleased to report that football stadium food is just as lousy in the UK as it is back in Australia. Gee that was a cr@ppy burger.

The game was a lot of fun to watch. I learned that Arsenal supporters are called Gooners – a play on the team’s nickname “Gunners”. The Gooner army was in fine form, chanting away throughout the game. In the grand scheme of things this was not considered to be an important game for the club, and the crowd was still pretty full on, so I can only imagine what they’re like for a “real” game. In a fitting result, Arsenal won 2-1. I came home with an Arsenal scarf, an Arsenal coffee mug (which even has my name on it) and a rediscovered enthusiasm for “the beautiful game”.

As a quick aside – my theory on why soccer fans chant all the time and occasionally get violent is because scoring is such a rarity – there’s not enough opportunity for release. Hence  the mad celebration when someone finally scores. Yes, it could be argued that good things are worth waiting for. But the thought of watching a 90min game for a 0-0 draw is like death for me. This ties in nicely with my extremely unpopular theory that Australian Rules Football is a far superior sport to soccer. But this is a subject worthy of it’s own post so I’ll leave it there – but I know I’m right..

I’ll be seeing Arsenal for the second time this weekend when they play Birmingham. Bring on the lousy burger and the chanting… which I’m bound to learn eventually.
